Same Here

My classmate talking about her news station mentioned something that my news station was also guilty of. Constant reporting on crime. Crime can be newsworthy but it rarely is. Every crime that my news station, WDRB, reported on was not relevant, newsworthy or important. The crimes were mediocre and most times were minor crimes were the criminal was already caught. The crimes didn't affect a lot of people and the people it did affect, they didn't affect them for a long time. WDRB should pursue some other stories because their crime ones aren't cutting it.

Movies

We discussed that the main reasons people still visit movie theaters is: the immersive experience, the need to be first (cultural experience) and the social experience. But I have a theory that if people stopped having the need to be first, movies wouldn't be nearly as popular as they are now. I honestly have no interest in seeing a movie first, I can wait until it comes to Redbox and save my money but the rest of society doesn't feel this way. The social experience I don't feel is as important because you can just go to someone's house and watch movies and the immersive experience is nice but $9.75 nice? I think not. If people stopped caring about being first and wanting to be in the loop I don't think an immersive experience or the social experience would be enough drive for people to pay ten dollars for a ticket.

TV culture

While talking about television a very good point came across when pointing out the impact of television on American culture. TV makes pop culture. Being on TV now makes things popular. There are so many things I grew up watching and I would see something in it and want it or want to be like that. For example: Zoey 101. In one episode all the kids in PCA got these cool sidekick like phones. Maybe months later, everybody had a sidekick. Also TV can start trends. You see a style on TV and it can be the main thing everyone is wearing weeks later. If it's seen on TV you will see it on the streets. TV makes pop culture. No questions asked.

Internet

Before Mr. Miller cleared things up with our class, I was under the impression that the Internet demassified all other medias but I have come to realize that this is not the case. Actually the internet basically emerged with all other medias. No other media went down because of the internet. If anything the Internet probably helped to expand their industries. Now companies can move their businesses onto the Internet. The internet really helped the medias by making them more available. Everyone has access to the internet, making them available to every other media. Other medias should be as grateful for the Internet as much as I am.

Response

I read my fellow group mate's post on their opinion on WDRB and I can second almost everything she said. WDRB does make their broadcast very diverse by having many stories and you can get to hear about a lot of things going on, BUT like Camille said, the stories aren't very in-depth. There were many times were I have watched a story on WDRB and by the end of the story I still didn't know what the story was about. Also like Camille said the stories tend to be more like headlines with just a two sentences description. Of course I would prefer a newspaper to television news, but comparing apples to apples, I'm not sure if I would prefer another station. As much as I would like to have more in depth stories, I do like being able to get a lot more stories. So then if I do hear a quick story that catches my interest I can look up the story and get more information. If the broadcast was setup that it was less stories more information, I would barely get to hear of all the news going on and if it were just a long broadcast of nothing I really cared about I would be wasting my time.

Halloween Party Pooper

As irrelevant as I thought it was, the most interesting story (in my opinion) that WDRB talked about was how in North Dakota, a women who was going by the name of Cheryl, was not going to pass out candy to kids who she thought were obese. Instead she was going to hand them a letter to give to their parents that basically told them how irresponsible it was of them to send their obese child out to scavenge free candy just because it was the norm.

Now once again I thought this story was no-where near newsworthy but I think that this story is just so messed up. This lady took it upon herself on a holiday that many kids look forward to, to spread her opinion on childhood obesity. While "Cheryl" thinks she's helping these overweight kids, she probably just worsened the situation. "Cheryl" trying to "look out" for these kids' health has premeditated to basically destroy some little chubby kid's confidence. Just imagine going trick or treating with your friends who all might just so happen to be smaller than you, and every single one of them gets candy but not you. You get a piece of paper telling you you're fat and shaming your parents. That's rude, cruel, and not okay.

Not only will this lady crush the confidence of these poor kids trying to enjoy their holiday but she can believe that she will have some LIVID parents at her door the next day.

Impacts of the Internet

Today while discussing the Internet, one fact that was brought up was that the internet has made underground cultures mostly disappear. This shocked me when I first heard it but as I thought about it I realized how true it was. With the internet the "underground" cultures aren't truly underground. Now that anyone can get on the internet, anyone can find these cultures. Artists nowadays could only want to have a small group of fans or want to be considered underground but if they posted any of their music/art on the internet and someone big in that industry finds it and likes it, they can be a pop star in weeks!
